What is the competition about?
As part of our growing initiative, Tutors SA is organising an Essay Writing Competition in conjunction with the Harmony Day. In this competition, students are encouraged to submit their essay revolving around the topic of “cultural diversity”, “harmony” and “everyone belongs”.
The objective of this event is to raise awareness about the theme of “Harmony Day”. In addition, the initiative is aimed to boost students’ confidence and give them an opportunity to demonstrate their writing talents as part of their learning process.
Who can participate?
This competition is open to all Year 1 – 12 students who are currently enrolled and active at Tutors SA.
Start date: 7 March 2019
Submission deadline: 17 March 2019
Winner announcement: 27 March 2019
Submit the essay in Microsoft Word format to info@TutorsSA.com.au by 11.59pm on 17th March 2019.
Award & Prizes
Students will be awarded within their age categories:
- Junior Primary (Y1-Y2)
- Middle Primary (Y3-Y4)
- Upper Primary (Y5-Y7)
- Middle School (Y8-Y10)
- Upper Secondary (Y11-Y12)
Students who win will receive their prize and certificate at the students’ respective class at the same week after the announcement.
1st prize winner: 5 winners (1 winner per category)
Prize: $50 Coles Myer gift card, $50 worth free tuition at Tutors SA, Tutors SA water bottle and Certificate*
2nd prize winner: 5 winners (1 winner per category)
Prize: $30 Coles Myer gift card, $50 worth free tuition at Tutors SA, Tutors SA water bottle and Certificate*
3rd prize winner: 5 winners (1 winner per category)
Prize: $50 worth free tuition at Tutors SA, Tutors SA water bottle and Certificate*

The student can choose to select a persuasive or creative writing topic and should write according to the criteria for the genre they select.
For example: Creative writing follows a narrative structure and is highly descriptive. Persuasive writing states a position and gives reasons to support their perspective.
You are welcome to enter in both categories or pick your preferred choice. The word limit for the essay differs by category:
- Junior Primary (Y1-Y2): Min 100 – Max 200
- Middle Primary (Y3-Y4): Min 300 – Max 500
- Upper Primary (Y5-Y7): Min 400 – Max 600
- Middle School (Y8-Y10): Min 500 – Max 800
- Upper Secondary (Y11-Y12): Min 500 – Max 800
Topic 1: Do you think cultural diversity plays an important role in making Australia a great place to live? Explain your reasons?
Topic 2: Cultural harmony is where everyone feels like they belong not matter what their race, status or religion. Do you agree or disagree?
Topic 3: Write a story about being different and learning to belong in Australia.
Topic 4: Write a story about the adventure of moving to Australia.
